Choreography

Over 30 Solo and Ensemble choreographic works created as a member of Dublin Contemporary Dance Theatre (1981-1986), as founder Artistic Director of Daghdha Dance Company ( 1988-1999) and in my capacity as independent dance artist (1999 to date). This body of work includes the following choreographies:

2016

Search Up to a Point. Re-working of ‘Search’ (1983). Choreographed in collaboration with Katherine O’Malley and Oscar Mascarenas. Created as part of Live Archive project curated by Emma Meehan. Premier performance Dance Ireland, toured to Dance Limerick and Firkin Crane, Cork.

Open O a live interactive participative performance score: an invitation to an encounter with minimal constructs.  30 minutes in silence together, performer and audience as both one and the other. This shared silent is followed by an open informal exchange, a chance to speak (or not). Facilitated by Mary Nunan and Monica Spencer. Dance Limerick, Limerick City Gallery of Art, Echo Echo Derry.

2015

Starting with T  - interdisciplinary project conceived by choreographer Mary Nunan and developed in collaboration with Mary Wycherley, Jürgen Simpson and Monica Spencer. The project involved women drawn from a range of communities in Limerick City.

2013

‘Dancers’ ensemble choreography commissioned by Dance Limerick. Premiere performance took place in the Daghdha Space, St. John’s Square, Limerick.

“Once Upon a Space” (choreographed in collaboration with composer Karen Power). Peformed with Karen Power, Kate Ellis and Deirdre O’Leary. Premier Cork Mid-Summer Festival, toured to Belltable, Limerick and The Loft Dublin

Unfolding into Stillness” Solo choreography performed on the occasion of the Dalai Lama’s  visit to Limerick. Original music composed and performed by Kenneth Edge

“Sand” Choreography for a ”staged” ensemble reading/performance of a a play/poem/dance by Deirdre Nunan. Belltable Unfringed Festival. Work in progress to be further developed.

Maya Lila. Improvised Performances. Collaborative artist and performer with this collective from 2002-2009. directed by Joan Davis. 2009 performances; Gorse Hill, Arts Centre, Tinahely, Co. Wicklow Dance House, Dublin.

“Riddle in Nine syllables, Get It?” Solo choreography and performance. (10 mins) Inspired by the poem “I’m a riddle in nine syllables” by Sylvia Plath. Premiere; Town Hall Theatre, Galway as part of  “The Word is Moving” programme curated by Tanya Mac Crory.

2008

“Return Journey” choreography-for-camera and live performance installation developed in collaboration with film-maker James Kelly. (144 mins.) Premiere; Project Arts Centre, Dublin. Live performance 10.00-20.00 daily.

2007

“Audience (1) Waltzers” Live performance installation. Choreographed in collaboration with sound artist Michael Mc Loughlin. (25 mins).  Premiere;  Limerick City Gallery. 2006

“The Boy Soldier” choreography for this Red Kettle Theatre Company in collaboration with theatre directors Pat Kiernan and Ben Hennessey. (70 mins). Pemiered in Garter Lane, Waterford. Toured to venues nationally.

“The God Series No. 1” Solo choreography and performance;premiered in Limerick City Gallery. (10 mins.)

2003

“The Yellow Room” colaborative artist and performer in this ensemble choreography, directed by Yoshiko Chuma. (60 mins).  Premiered; Project Arts Centre, Dublin. Toured to Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray; Roscommon Arts Centre; Aras Eanna Arts Centre, Inis Oirr, Co. Galway; Glor, Ennis; Garter Lane, Waterford and Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick.

2002

Maya Lila Improvised Performances – collaborative artist and performer in a series of improvised performance offerings presented at Gorse Hill, Greystones, Co. Wicklow. Devising process and performances throughout the month of July.

“Claim reClaim” Solo commissioned by International Dance Festival under Artistic Director Catherine Nunes. Music : Kodaly, Solo Cello, Opus No. 8, performed live by cellist Ference Szucs. (40 mins.). Premiere; Project Arts Centre, Dublin.

“Far Flung” Ensemble choreography for Daghdha Dance Company. Music composition created live at every performance by Natasha Lohan (30 mins.) Premiere; Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick. Toured as part of “Double Take” programme to Old Museum Arts Centre, Belfast and Samuel Beckett Theatre, Dublin.

“Secret Project” collaborative artist and performer in a Half Angel/Firkin Crane production, directed by Jools Gilson-Ellis and Richard Povall; Premiere; Banff Arts Centre, Canada. Performed Firkin Crane, Cork, Project Arts Centre, Dublin.

“Chimera” Ensemble choreography for Daghdha Dance Company. Original score/ montage by Natasha Lohan included works composed by Roger Doyle Donnacha Dennehy and John Cage. (33 mins.)

“Bach to Bach” Ensemble for Daghdha Dance Company. Performed as part of  “New Twist” Daghdha’s Education programme. (10 mins.). Toured to schools nationally and also performed in the Ark, Dublin and at Suffolk Dance Agency,  Haverhill, Suffolk.

“Clan Lir” Ensemble choreography for the National Folk Theatre at Siamsa Tire. (80 mins.). Premiere: National Folk Theatre, Tralee. Performed annually as part of the Company’s summer season.

1997

“Territorial Claims” (2) Screen adaptation of  the original dance theatre work . Created in collaboration with film-maker Donal Haughy. Produced in association with RTE. Selected for screening at Dance- for-Camera Festival, Lincoln Centre, New York. Included in a DVD distributed by Insight Media.

“Little Red Riding Hood and the Wolves of Progress Gone Wild” Ensemble choreography for Daghdha Dance Company. Original Music by Michael Seaver. (50 mins).Toured to schools nationally as part of Daghdha’s Education programme and performed in the Ark, Dublin.

“Aerdha” Ensemble choreography for Daghdha Dance Company. Original music composed by Micheal O Suilleabhain. (20 mins). Premiere;  Concert Hall, University of Limerick. Toured as part of “Three Piece Suite” programme to Samuel Beckett Centre, Dublin; Firkin Crane, Cork; Belltable, Limerick.

“Tales of the Unexpected” Ensemble for Daghdha Dance Company. Original Music composed by Michael Seaver. (50 mins.).Toured to schools nationally as part of Daghdha’s Education programme.

“On Earth as it is in Heaven” Ensemble choreography commissioned by  Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique and de Danse, Lyon, France. (30 mins). Premiere; Pompidiou Center, Paris as part of L’Imaginaire Irelandaise Festival.  Later developed as an ensemble choreography for Daghdha Dance Company. Music: Phillip Glass. Toured to as part of “Three Piece Suite” programme to Samuel Beckett Theatre, Dublin; Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick; Firkin Crane, Cork.
